NFL 2010 Preseason Week 1 Notes

Panthers vs Ravens

Panthers

  • Injured so did not play: Steve Smith, Jonathan Stewart, Jeff Otah (OT)
  • 1st string offense had 3 drives.  Ravens kept the pressure coming and QB Matt Moore could not handle it
  • Rushing (Attempts): Deangelo Williams (5) – Hit the holes with speed…looked great, Brandon Lafell (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): TE Jeff King (3) – Mainly a safety valve, Dwayne Jarrett (2), FB Tony Fiametta (2), TE Donte Rosario (1), Brandon Lafell (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Good mix of run and pass, but could not get into a rhythm due to the pressure/penalties
  • O-Line: LT Jordan Gross got called for two holding penalties.  Pocket consistently crumbled with a little pressure.  Run blocking was excellent though.
  • Defense: Great pressure up front, but the pass defense was pretty bad.  Tyler Brayton (from Raiders) got injured after two sacks (one in each of the first two drives!)
  • Beyond 1st String: I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Jimmy Clausen reminded my of Peyton Manning when it comes to controlling the offense (i.e. barking at O-Line to pickup blitzes, audibles, etc.). Minus the fumble, Tyrelle Sutton had vision, speed, and power (for a little guy)…he looked AWESOME!

Ravens

  • Ray Rice did not play
  • 1st string offense had 3 drives.  Thanks to the play-calling & O-Line, Flacco looked really good.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Leron McClain (4), McGahee (1), Flacco (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): Mark Clayton (3) – Had a nice TD catch, Anquan Boldin (3), McGahee (3) – bulked up and still had great speed, Derrick Mason (1), Todd Heap (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Almost all passes, but great mix of short, medium, and deep ones.
  • O-Line: Excellent on run blocking, average on pass-blocking
  • Defense: Provided lots of pressure
  • Beyond 1st String: Bulger kept trying to Stallworth with no success
  • Other: Did not realize this but, Al Saunders is the Senior Offensive Assistant, while Jim Zorn is the QBs coach

Saints vs Patriots

Saints

  • 1st string offense had 3 drives.    Brees was extremely accurate…and really distributed the ball around
  • Rushing (Attempts): Reggie Bush (5) – except for the outside TD run…ran up the middle so didn’t do much, Pierre Thomas (6) – Ran hard, but didn’t have much explosiveness.   He had 2 TD run attempts prior to Bush punching it in from the outside
  • Receiving (Targets): Reggie Bush (2), Lance Moore (3) – caught two and were good catches, Shockey (3) – caught all three…looking really good, Colston (1), Pierre Thomas (1), Devery Henderson (2), David Thomas (1), Pierre Thomas (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Lots of short passes, and runs up the middle…pretty boring
  • O-Line: Average.  Better on pass protection than run.
  • Defense:
  • Beyond 1st String:

Patriots

  • 1st string offense had 2 drives.
  • Rushing (Attempts):  Green-Ellis (7) – Was the starter…isn’t very creative…but had a TD run, Kevin Faulk (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): #82 (1), Kevin Faulk (1), Moss (3) – in sync with Brady…looking awesome, Edelman (2) – Is a beast!, WR Brandon Tate (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection:
  • O-Line: Great Pass Blocking, but few gaps in Run blocking
  • Defense:
  • Beyond 1st String:

Raiders vs Cowboys

Raiders

  • 1st string offense had 4 drives. McFadden did not play due to injury.  Jason Campbell had time and some of his throws were erratic, while others were dead on
  • Rushing (Attempts): Michael Bush (7) – ran hard and moved the pile…but didn’t show any jukes/spins/etc., Rock Cartwright (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): Louis Murphy (4) – A big fan of this guy…excellent route running with hands, Zach Miller (4) – a huge fan of him too…and he looked fantastic, Heyward-Bey (1), FB Reise (1), Michael Bush (1), WR Todd Watkins
  • Offensive Play Selection: Lots of runs up the middle
  • O-Line: Actually looked above average…especially with the run blocking up the middle
  • Defense: Three Coverage Sacks on 1st drive!
  • Beyond 1st String:

Cowboys

  • 1st string offense had 2 drives.  Receivers struggled to get open.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Barber (3), Felix Jones (2), Romo (1), Austin (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): Austin (2) – Made an awesome catch, and showed great speed, Roy Williams (2) – was getting owned by the defenders, Witten (1), Barber (1), Crayton (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Outstanding…great mix of run and pass
  • O-Line: Just okay against the Raiders defense
  • Defense:  Good, but not as good as the Raiders
  • Beyond 1st String:

Bills vs Redskins

Redskins

  • 1st string offense had 2 drives. McNabb looked like he did with the Eagles…most passes were on target, but a few were way off.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Portis (6) – O-Line made him look good, Moss (1), Ryan Torain (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): Cooley (3) – Made all three catches and was McNabb’s favorite target, WR Anthony Armstrong (2) – Had a TD catch…but just doesn’t have the look/movement of a polished WR, Moss (1), Roydell Williams (2) – starter…had an excellent run after catch…hasn’t played since 2007…could be a sleeper, Joey Galloway (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Typical Shanahan…more runs than passes…but an excellent mix (deep, short, inside, outside) of each
  • O-Line: Great pass and run blocking…didn’t see any
  • Defense: After the 1st drive, they owned the Bills
  • Beyond 1st String: Ryan Torain had a ton of carries and looked powerful running/catching balls, Fred Davis had a great TD catch

Bills

  • 1st string offense had 4 drives.  3 Starting O-Lineman did not play due to injury.  Edwards threw a dumb pick and looked awful.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Fred Jackson (2) – starter…looked average, C.J. Spiller (2) – looked better than Jackson…but not as good as Lynch, Marshawn Lynch (1) – had an awesome run called back…looked like Lynch of old
  • Receiving (Targets): Lee Evans (5) – Cause of poor passes he only caught 2…both of which looked great…but still got the most looks from Edwards, WR Steve Johnson (3) – starter…had secondary beat on one play but Edwards couldn’t deliver…had good run after catch, TE Jonathan Stupar (1), FB Corey McIntyre (1), WR Roscoe Parrish (1), Marshawn Lynch (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: All short passes except for one way off long one
  • O-Line: not good, but not terrible…better run blocking than pass
  • Defense:  Secondary wasn’t good,  Linebackers looked good
  • Beyond 1st String:

Jaguars vs Eagles

Eagles

  • 1st string offense had 2 1/2 drives. 1st String offense missing one offensive linemen.  Kevn Kolb threw accurate deep balls.  Vick threw one completion with 1st String
  • Rushing (Attempts): LeSean “Shady” McCoy (8) – didn’t have a lot of space…but still gained yards shedding tacklers…looked really good, Kolb (2) – Quite mobile, #43 (1), DeSean Jackson (1) – juked the jock strap out of one of the defenders
  • Receiving (Targets): Brent Celek (5) – dropped a perfect TD pass from his roommate, DeSean Jackson (2) – Awesome YAC, Jeremy Maclin (4) – great 20+ yard pass reception, Jason Avant (2)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Runs up the middle, middle/long passes
  • O-Line: Very good run blocking…outstanding pass blocking
  • Defense: Dominated…didn’t allow 1st down in 1st quarter
  • Beyond 1st String: Along with the excellent speed, Vick looks like a better passer than ever…he threw a perfect long ball to WR Riley Cooper, and made an awesome TD run.

Jaguars

  • 1st string offense had 3 drives…all of which were duds.  The offense just looked out-of-sync…like they weren’t prepared.  Garrard’s passes were slow and predictable.
  • Rushing (Attempts):  MJD (2) – offense couldn’t get going…not his fault
  • Receiving (Targets): Mike Sims-Walker (6) – Sadly only caught one, TE Mercedes Lewis (1), MJD (1), Mike Thomas (1) – caught a nice long one
  • Offensive Play Selection: Yuck, yuck, yuck
  • O-Line: Decent…need to watch the next two preseason games
  • Defense: Made great tackles, but pass defense was atrocious
  • Beyond 1st String: Luke McCown looked like an elite NFL QB…shocking!  Every pass…most of them being medium-to-long ones were accurate!

Chiefs vs Falcons

Falcons

  • 1st string offense had 2 drives.  Offense was run heavy, so Matt Ryan didn’t pass much.  He did show great pocket presence.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Turner (4) – He (along with the excellent run blocking) are back!, Snelling (7) – One powerful RB…was doing a RBBC with Turner
  • Receiving (Targets): Turner (1), White (2) – dropped two balls, Gonzo (2)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Except for a dump-off, all runs (and excellent ones) in 1st drive.
  • O-Line:  Run-blocking is great…pass blocking is just ok.  The pocket was small for Ryan and did collapse at times.
  • Defense: Kept pressuring Cassel…looked like a top 16 defense
  • Beyond 1st String:

Chiefs

  • 1st string offense had 4 drives.  Cassel’s throws were both accurate and way off
  • Rushing (Attempts): Thomas Jones (2) – starter…did nothing, Jamaal Charles (3) – wow…explosive…should be the starter, McCluster (5) – fast and has great hands, Battle (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): Chris Chambers (2) – starter, TE Leonard Pope (2), Jamaal Charles (2), FB Tim Castille (1), Battle (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection:  Runs with Charles = Excellent.  Mostly short ineffective passes
  • O-Line: Run blocking = very good.  Pass blocking  = Terrible!
  • Defense:  Pass defense looked ok, Run defense wasn’t good
  • Beyond 1st String:

Bucs vs Dolphins – Weather: Heavy Rain

Dolphins

  • 1st string offense had 4 drives.  Henne was under pressure and his receivers kept dropping the ball…will evaluate in the next two preseason games.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Ronnie Brown (4) – starter…looked really good…nimble on his feet on a wet field, Ricky Williams (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): FB Polite (2), Ricky Williams (3), Brandon Marshall (2) – dropped two…one would have been a big play too, Anthony Fasano (1), Brian Hartline (2) – starter…dropped one ball

  • O-Line: Run blocking was good, Pass blocking was average

  • Offensive Play Selection:  More runs than passes
  • O-Line: Run blocking was ok, pass blocking was great
  • Defense:  Pressured Henne…looked good
  • Beyond 1st String: Backup QB Josh Johnson can run, but he can’t throw

Titans vs Seahawks

Titans

  • 1st string offense had 2 drives.  Vince Young had plenty of time to throw the ball, and made some great passes…but he also threw one dumb interception
  • Rushing (Attempts): Chris Johnson (5) – he’s a top 2 RB for sure, Vince Young (2)
  • Receiving (Targets): Nate Washington (2) – caught both balls…looked good, FB Ahmad Hall (1), Justin Gage (2) – slow, but has great hands, TE Craig Stevens (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Great mix of runs and passes.  Look like a strong offense.
  • O-Line: Incredible…one of the best in the NFL
  • Defense: Sacked Hasselbeck, D-Line knocked down pass…looked like top 10 defense
  • Beyond 1st String:  Backup O-Line was awful.  RB Javon Ringer got the touches after Johnson and except for one great run, got stuffed on most plays. Britt beat the coverage on a long ball but was overthrown by Simms.

Seahawks

  • 1st string offense had 3 drives.  Hasselbeck was under pressure, but was accurate and looked great when he got the passes off.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Julius Jones (4) – ran hard…but wasn’t explosive
  • Receiving (Targets): Deion Branch (5) – starter…caught two of them and they were both 10+ yard passes,  Houshmandzadeh (2) – caught both of them but they were short passes, John Carlson (1), Julius Jones (1) – dropped the ball
  • Offensive Play Selection: Lots of quick passes
  • O-Line: Below average…holes for run plays were small or didn’t exist…small pocket for Hasselbeck
  • Defense: Picked off Vince Young
  • Beyond 1st String:  Forsett looked fantastic…running and catching…was fast and hit the holes / turned the cornershard.  WR Mike Williams (drafted #10 in 2005) is big and pretty fast…had an awesome TD reception from Whitehurst.

Texans vs Cardinals

Texans

  • 1st string offense had 2 1/2 drives.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Arian Foster (5) – wow…this dude is fast…too bad there weren’t a lot of holes, Jacoby Jones (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): Andre Johnson (3) – all 3 catches including a 44 yard TD…he’s the #1 Fantasy WR this year, Joel Dressen (1), Kevin Walter (1), David Andersen (2)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Excellent
  • O-Line: Just average
  • Defense: On 1st drive, 3rd down, Mario Williams pummels RT Brandon Keith, getting the sack.  He got a sack in the 2nd drive too.
  • Beyond 1st String: Slaton was the workhorse with the 2nd string and showed bursts of speed…looked really good…except for the fumble in the end zone

Cardinals

  • 1st string offense had 3 drives.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Hightower (5) – starter…he stinks…no speed and gets tackled easily, Beanie Wells (3)
  • Receiving (Targets): Larry Fitzgerald (1) – Amazing catch due to dangerous pass…had to ice down knee after play, Anthony Becht (1), RB Jason Wright (1), Early Doucet (2), TE Stephen Spach (1), Hightower (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Had to pass more due to sacks and runs for short/no yardage
  • O-Line: Not very good…very few holes to run threw and Leinart constantly under pressure

  • Other: Breaston – starter…but got no targets

Lions vs Steelers

Steelers

  • 1st string offense had 4 drives.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Mendenhall (5) – fumbled, Mewelde Moore (1), Isaac Redman (5) – Hard to get off his feet…ran extremely well when he had space.

  • Offensive Play Selection: Run, run run…all passes were dump offs except for three
  • O-Line: Leftwich was pressured on all pass plays in first two drives
  • Defense: Hit hard, but the Lions were still able to get down the field
  • Beyond 1st String: Dennis Dixon outplayed Byron Leftwich.  He had better pocket presence under pressure.  Also had an awesome “almost TD” run around the corner.  Isaac Redman was a workhorse with the 2nd string too.

Lions

  • 1st string offense had 3 drives.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Jahvid Best (6) – was stuffed up the middle…broke a big one on the outside…blazing speed
  • Receiving (Targets): Calvin Johnson (5) – big play called back due to penalty…two end zone targets followed by TD, Jahvid Best (2) – muffed a catch which resulted in an interception, Nate Burleson (2) – made great catches on both balls, TE Dan Drakowski (1), Tony Scheffler (1), Bryant Johnson (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: Mainly long passes to receivers or dump offs to Best.
  • O-Line: Stafford was never pressured so excellent on Pass Blocking.  Decent on Run blocking…Best had to be creative to gain yards on runs up the middle.
  • Defense: DE Cliff Avril blew by RT Flozell Adams for a sack on 2nd drive.  Most run plays were stuffed.  Either the Detroit D-Line is awesome, or the Steelers O-Line is horrific.
  • Beyond 1st String:

49ers vs Colts

49ers

  • 1st string offense had 4 drives.  Alex Smith was off on most passes (overthrowing, behind receiver, etc.)
  • Rushing (Attempts): Michael Robinson (4) – fumble on 1st attempt
  • Receiving (Targets): Michael Robinson (3) – one attempt due to heavy pressure, TE Delanie Walker (2), Vernon Davis (2) – ball thrown behind him one time…then thrown over his head later, Ted Ginn (1) – botched WR screen
  • Offensive Play Selection: Felt like the defense knew what the offense was going to do on most plays
  • O-Line: Good run and pass blocking
  • Defense: Great run defense…poor pass defense
  • Beyond 1st String: RB Anthony Dixon is strong short stocky back who knows how to wait for his blockers and pushes the pile…very impressed

Colts

  • 1st string offense had 3 drives. Pierre Garcon and Dallas Clark did not play.  Peyton passed down the field with ease…looked like he was in mid-season form.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Addai (5) – had little running room up middle…had TD run on outside…also didn’t have much explosion to get threw the smaller holes
  • Receiving (Targets): TE Eldridge (1), Addai (1), Wayne (3) – red zone attempt, Anthony Gonzalez (2) – red zone attempt, Austin Collie (2), TE Jacob Tamme (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection: More passes than runs, which were much more effective
  • O-Line: Pass blocking = excellent.  Run blocking = below average
  • Defense: Very Good…though felt like Niners shot themselves in foot
  • Beyond 1st String:

  • Defense: Great on 1st two drives, but gave up TD on 3rd drive
  • Beyond 1st String:

Bengals

  • 1st string offense had 3 drives.  Palmer looked really good though he didn’t have any memorable passes…mainly a bunch of simple short ones.

  • Offensive Play Selection: Even split of runs and passes
  • O-Line: Both run and pass blocking are average
  • Defense: Terrible pass defense.  Great run defense, though the Broncos didn’t run much
  • Beyond 1st String: Bernard Scott had nice 48 yard run around the corner.  O’Sullivan is awful!  How does he have a job still?

Chargers vs Bears

Chargers

  • Offensive Play Selection: With long passes…the Mike Martz effect is evident
  • O-Line: Pass blocking was average, run blocking was below average
  • Defense: Just ok…Got shredded by Chargers offense.
  • Beyond 1st String: Chester Taylor looked only ok because the run blocking didn’t give him any room.  There was around 8 receivers who got targets (including Josh Reed, Randy McMichael).

Vikings vs Rams

Vikings

  • 1st string offense had 1 drive.  Due to injury, Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin did not play.
  • Rushing (Attempts):  Albert Young (2)

  • Offensive Play Selection: Doesn’t matter b/c there’s no Favre or AP
  • O-Line: Better Pass than Run blocking, but both great
  • Defense: Knew where Feeley was throwing
  • Beyond 1st String: WR Jaymar Johnson, WR Logan Payne, and TE Garrett Mills looked good.  Rookie RB Toby Gerhart is strong, but slow.

Rams

  • 1st string offense had 3 drives.  First two drives with A.J. Feeley who was terrible.  3rd drive with Sam Bradford, who has a cannon for an arm, released quick before defenders could get to him, very accurate…really impressed.

  • Defense: Vikings 1st string only had 1 drive so hard to judge
  • Beyond 1st String:
  • Other: Punt return for TD by Amendola

Browns vs Packers

Browns

  • 1st string offense had 4 drives.  Jake Delhomme (QB on 1st drive) has more zip on his pass then I remember.  Seneca Wallace (QB on 2nd/3rd/4th drives)

  • Beyond 1st String:

Jets

  • 1st string offense had 5 drives.  Sanchez threw behind LT who was double-covered.  That lead to tip and interception.  Besides that, he was accurate with all of his other throws.  With time in the pocket, he’s a very good QB.

Hall of Fame Game Fantasy Football Notes

August 10th, 2010 · 56 Comments

NFL Football is back!

The following are my notes from the Bengals/Cowboys Hall of Fame game last Sunday night.  NOTE: Rushing Attempts and Targets include called back plays due to penalties

Cowboys

  • 1st String offense played in 1 long series.  Romo looked great on some passes but awful on others…overthrowing multiple times.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Felix Jones (3) – Had a fumbled goal line attempt, Marion Barber (2) – Had first carry. Both RBs looked good.
  • Receiving (Targets): Roy Williams (4) – Had the only two red zone targets, Miles Austin (2), Crayton (2), TE John Phillips (1), Felix Jones (1).  None of the receivers stood out since they had no room to run after the catches.
  • Offensive Play Selection: Roughly two passes to every one rush attempt
  • O-Line: Almost all of the rushing attempts were to the left side of the line.  O-Line looked fantastic…especially Doug Free (LT).
  • Defense: Great play calls (i.e. Had 8 in the box on a few runs).  Pressured Palmer without having to blitz.
  • Beyond 1st string notes: TE John Phillips made some awesome catches…too bad he was seriously injured.  With great vision and speed, Tashard Choice looked like he should be the starting RB.
  • Other: Dez Bryant didn’t play (had boot on leg on sideline)

Bengals

  • 1st String offense played in 2 series.  Palmer looked okay.  He was definitely under too much pressure.
  • Rushing (Attempts): Cedric Benson (2), Bernard Scott (1)
  • Receiving (Targets): T.O. (5) – Received all 4 targets in the 1st drive, Ocho Cinco (1)
  • Offensive Play Selection was pretty simple: 1) Pass to TO and 2) Run with Benson.  They couldn’t get a rhythm going.
  • O-Line: Looked below average.  Palmer had little room to throw on most passes.  Was pressured on half the pass plays with one pass knocked down by a D-Lineman.  The gaps for the 2 of the 3 run plays weren’t very large either.
  • Defense: No QB Pressure, no knocked down passes, etc.  Basically, nothing special.
  • Beyond 1st String Notes: Entire Bengals offense looked atrocious…especially the O-Line …no gaps for Scott and no time for O’Sullivan.  When O’Sullivan did have time, he couldn’t throw it in the ocean.

2010 NFL Draft Round 1 Complete, with Skilled Position Video Highlight Reels

April 23rd, 2010 · 22 Comments

Round 1 of the 2010 NFL Draft is complete.  As expected, with the #1 Pick, Matthew Stafford goes to the Rams.  But, kind of surprising, the Broncos trade up to draft Tim Tebow with the 25th pick.  It is interesting there were only a total of 8 offensive skilled position players drafted in the 1st round.  The rest of the draft results with commentary are on a ton of other websites, so instead, below are some college highlight compilations of skilled positions players (minus QBs) drafted today. All of these guys seriously look like they could be fantasy football draft worthy.

Pick 9 – C.J. Spiller (RB) – Bills

Pick 12 – Ryan Matthews (RB) – Chargers

Pick 21 – Jermaine Gresham (TE) – Bengals

Pick 22 – Demaryius Thomas (WR) – Broncos

Pick 24 – Dez Bryant (WR) – Cowboys
