Eddie Says:
We finally got an opportunity to do our second mock draft of the off-season. We did the 2nd and 11th spot this time so we can report on different perspectives of the draft.
Normally one would think that drafting early would be ideal but this 2nd spot proved to be quite difficult. As expected, Adrian Peterson went first but the second through fourth spot that leaves some uncertainty.
Coming back around into round two I was able to grab a pretty decent second running back and then on to round three I did well with Roddy White but that is where the trouble began. The top 20 WRs were gone by the time my pick came in the 4th round and my plan was to pick Witten but he got snagged before it was my turn. I panicked and timed out and the computer picked Gates for me. I would not have picked him but was having a problem finding a valued pick for that spot.
Lessons learned from this draft: If you draft early (Round 1-3) you may want to go RB, WR, WR to ensure you get quality WRs. You can get potential steal with in the later rounds with a RB than you can with a WR so you better get your studs early. Miles Austin and Chris Henry became my WR2. Not good!
The Fred Zone:
With our second mock draft, instead of drafting 5th (like I did in our first mock draft), I decided to give the 11th pick a shot. Here were my new 4 goals, based on what I learned from the first mock draft:
- Draft two of the top 14 RBs and two of the top 20 WRs
- Get Olsen, Daniels, or Cooley as 1st TE and Vernon Davis as backup TE
- Get QB2s late, in back-to-back rounds, after drafting stud defense and solid RB/WR backups
- For the backup RBs, draft an up-an-coming young RB and a solid, starting RB late
Here’s my squad, with my thoughts on each pick:
- Frank Gore – Like the Eagles have done with Westbrook in past years, the offense will run through Gore this year. Love Gore this year.
- Brian Westbrook – Like I just mentioned, Westbrook (when healthy) has been the center of the Eagles offense. Is he being phased out of the offense? If he produces early (and stays healthy), no way. He’s worth a gamble in the 2nd round.
- Brandon Marshall – Even with contract, and off the field issues, he’s a top 20 WR.
- T.J. Houshmandzadeh – I know a Knapp offense is more run focused, but it’s also more short-pass focused…and Housh will flourish.
- Jonathan Stewart – Since Deangelo Williams is going to get the majority of the carries, I probably need to wait to draft Stewart, or go with someone else. I’ll adjust accordingly next mock draft. But, he’s just such an f’n beast.
- Chris Wells – I definitely do not think Tim Hightower is good enough to be a starting RB. With the run-ignorant Haley out of there, I have this gut feeling there will be a 1,200 yard rusher in Arizona. On film, Wells has the skillz to be that guy.
- Kellen Winslow – Winslow will lead the Bucs in receptions…mark my words! He’s a steal in round 7.
- Owen Daniels – I should have drafted a stud defense here, and drafted Vernon Davis in the 10th round. I won’t make that mistake again.
- Ben Roethlisberger – Steal in the 9th round
- Matt Hasselbeck – Like I said before, he’s my #1 sleeper in ‘09.
- Chicago Defense – Best available defense…and not bad b/c of their special teams.
- Deion Branch – He’s the #2 WR in Seattle, and may get traded to the Jets before regular season starts.
- New England Defense – Great #2 Defense…very happy here.
- Mason Crosby – He’s a top 5 Kicker
- Ronald Curry – Now that he’s in St. Louis, and he’s the best WR there (yes, I think he’s better than Avery), he finally has the chance to shine.
