2008-2009 NFL Week 3 Picks

Matt SchaubSunday – 21 September 2008
Arizona Cardinals @ Washington Redskins

Eddie: (Winner – Redskins)

I like the Skins at home.

Fred: (Winner – Cardinals)

Skins entire offense won’t be able to score as many points as the Cardinals pass offense.  Upset pick #1!

Kansas City Chiefs @ Atlanta Falcons

Eddie: (Winner – Falcons)

This team, the Chiefs, needs a new identity and it starts with the removal of Edwards.  He took a once powerful running team and turned them into a soft j.v. team.

Fred: (Winner – Falcons)

I picked the worst team in the NFL last week, and go figure it’s the only game I miss.  Sorry Chiefs, until you either fire Herm, or miraculously discover an offense or defense, I’m not going to make that mistake again.  We see the Michael Turner of Week 1 as the Falcons get the home ‘W’.

Oakland Raiders @ Buffalo Bills

Eddie: (Winner – Bills)

With no offense it will be hard for the Raiders to win especially against a tough defensive squad like the Bills.

Fred: (Winner – Bills)

The Bills look like very good so far.  Balanced, controlled offense with a solid defense.  On the flip side, it’s just a matter of time til either the head coach gets the heck of Dodge (Oakland) on his own accord, or Ol’ Al Davis gives him the boot.  Bills easily win this won.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Chicago Bears

Eddie: (Winner – Bears)

I’m not sold on the Bucs offense yet and because of that I’m going with the home team.

Fred: (Winner – Bears)

No Galloway, no pass offense for the Bucs.  Bears win this low scoring affair.

Carolina Panthers @ Minnesota Vikings

Eddie: (Winner – Vikings)

It’s possible that after this game the Panthers will be 3-0 and the Vikings will be 0-3.  Nope.  Not going to happen.  Take the Vikings.

Fred: (Winner – Vikings)

Good ol’ Gus is back as a starting QB.  But, the once “center of the Panthers offense” is back from suspension.  As of the time of this writing, it appears AP will play, so I’m going with the Vikings.  This should be a really close, exciting one.

Houston Texans @ Tennessee Titans

Eddie: (Winner – Texans)

I don’t really have much to say about either of this time.  Unless you’re a fan of one or the other then this game will be like watching HGTV at 2 am.

Fred: (Winner – Texans) => UPSET SPECIAL OF THE WEEK!

Texans, off a bye week, surprise the stellar Titans defense and put up over 24 points.  Titans offense is unable to muster enough points, so Texans get the win.  Upset pick #2!

Cincinnati Bengals @ New York Giants

Eddie: (Winner – Giants)

There may be one or two games this year where you’ll want to pick the Bengals but this isn’t one of them.

Fred: (Winner – Giants)

Who did the Super Bowl winning Giants pay off to get these pathetic teams at the beginning of the season?  Giants win in a blowout…of course!

Miami Dolphins @ New England Patriots

Eddie: (Winner – Patriots)

So I made a mistake of not picking the Pats last week.  I won’t make the same mistake this week.

Fred: (Winner – Patriots)

I’ll only pick against the Patriots when they play the top-dogs (i.e. Packers, Cowboys, etc.)  The Dolphins are not in that list.

St Louis Rams @ Seattle Seahawks

Eddie: (Winner – Rams)

The Seattle defense will keep them in the game but I think SJax will win this one for the Rams.

Fred: (Winner – Seahawks)

I watch the Rams offense and shed a tear for what used to be the “Greatest Show on Turf”.  A pee wee league defensive line could get by the Rams offensive line.  Even a beatup Seahawks team, at home, should easily take care of the Rams.

Detroit Lions @ San Francisco 49ers

Eddie: (Winner – 49ers)

I still like the vibe of this team and I think they can keep their cohesiveness together against a Lioness Detroit team.

Fred: (Winner – 49ers)

As most NFL sports media outlets have already mentioned, Martz is looking to get revenge against his prior team.  With the poor defensive coaching in San Fran, the Lions should put up plenty of points.  But, the Niners will put up a few more to get the win.  Bet “the over” on this one…it should be a fun one.

New Orleans Saints @ Denver Broncos

Eddie: (Winner – Saints)

Denver’s luck has to run out eventually.  I’m not saying they are a bad team but if you watched last week’s game you know what I mean.  Why do you think Shanahan went for the 2 point conversion.

Fred: (Winner – Broncos)

Denver is definitely one of the hottest teams in the NFL.  Just like Rodgers is doing in Green Bay, Culter is playing like a top 5 QB.  Even without Colston, I believe the Saints offense will do just fine.  But that Denver offense, with all of its weapons, is just flat out more powerful.  In Denver, the Broncos win this one.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Indianapolis Colts

Eddie: (Winner – Colts)

Second half of last week it looked like the Colts were back.  That is bad news for the Jags.

Fred: (Winner – Colts)

The battle of the backup interior offensive lines here.  There are so many things going on with both of these teams, I don’t know where to start.  With the Jags, MJD and Fred Taylor are kinda banged up, plus no Jerry Porter still.  Colts have Peyton friggin’ Manning, and Addai (or Marvin) are due for a big game to makeup for the last one.  Colts barely win this one.

Cleveland Browns @ Baltimore Ravens

Eddie: (Winner – Browns)

Ravens – heads.  Browns – tails.

Fred: (Winner – Browns)

The Ravens have NO offense.  A defense can only score so many points.  The Browns offense is WAY overdue for a good-to-great game.  Browns score over 20 and win.  Upset pick #3!

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Philadelphia Eagles

Eddie: (Winner – Steelers)

This is going to be a letdown loss for the Eagles.

Fred: (Winner – Steelers)

The Eagles offense looked amazing last week, while the Steelers…not so much.  But, the Steelers defense was suffocating, while the Eagles defense got rolled and smoked.  I give the Steelers the slight edge to win this close game.  Upset pick #4!

Dallas Cowboys @ Green Bay Packers

Eddie: (Winner – Cowboys)

The Packers have the defense but do they have the offense to keep up with this superpower?

Fred: (Winner – Packers)

Talk about two powerhouses colliding…wow!  The Cowboys offense is slowed down by a much better defense in Green Bay.  Since this game is in Lambeau, the Packers will definitely win it.  It will be an awesome game though.  Upset pick #5!

Monday – 22 September 2008New York Jets @ San Diego Chargers

Eddie: (Winner – Chargers)

Chargers 0-3?  Hard to imagine.

Fred: (Winner – Chargers)

I don’t normally pick this way, but even with Favre and his Monday night magic, I don’t think the Chargers are going to be 0-3.
