Out with Mike Sherman, and in with Kyle Shanahan and Alex Gibbs. What kind of effect will this have on the Texans offense? This is a tough one to predict.
This year, the head coach Gary Kubiak was the play-caller, but received guidance from Sherman. From purely a play-calling perspective, with all of the injuries on the offensive side the Texans had, this combo did a great job. They were the 14th ranked offense in the NFL. In 2007, my biggest complaint with the Texans was their RB personnel. Going into 2007, all football fans knew that their RBs were suspect. In most fantasy leagues, Ahman Green was one of the last starting RBs drafted!
In 2008, instead of a two-headed play-calling monster, it’ll be a three-headed one in Kubiak/Shanahan/Gibbs. It’s almost like Kubiak and Gibbs want to re-live some of the glory years in Denver, but with Mike’s son this time. The chemistry between the three should be outstanding. The offense will either be as good as it was in ’07, or better. I believe a franchise RB for the future is what the Texans desperately need.
Interesting stat: In 2005, Sherman’s last year in Green Bay, the Packers offense was ranked 18th in the NFL. In 2006, they became the 9th best offense.
Final commentary: Granted Belichick is the head coach, but having the youngest offensive coordinator in 2007 (Josh McDaniels at 31) worked to the tune of a 16-0 regular season record for those New England Patriots. It could work for the Texans in 2008, right?
It’s not very interesting, but below is an interview from Dec ’07 with Shanahan:
